Title: "Combining machine learning and neuroimaging techniques in the study of the autism spectrum disorder"

Abstract: Neuroimaging techniques (such as electroencephalography – EEG – or functional magnetic resonance imaging – fMRI) provide us a window to the functioning of the brain which, explored with machine learning techniques, can be used to get new insights of its functioning and, in the case of brain disorders, characterize abnormal processes (biomarking) and even provide tools for self-correction, such as neurofeedback or brain-computer interfaces. This talk will provide an overview of these concepts and detail the efforts taken in their application to the autism spectrum disorder, both in the study and interventional fields.

Short-bio: Marco Simões is a PhD student from the PDCTI program conducting his research at the Faculty of Medicine from the University of Coimbra (CIBIT) in cooperation with CISUC, under the joint supervision of professors Miguel Castelo-Branco and Paulo de Carvalho. His work focus on the study of the autism spectrum disorder and the development of adequate innovative neurorehabilitation solutions, combining neuroimaging, machine learning and virtual reality.
