Invited Speaker: Xavi Masip-Bruin
Title: "Fog-to-cloud: the real need for resources coordination "
Abstract: The recent advances in the ICT technology are fueling a plethora of new services and solutions all undoubtedly impacting on the way society behaves.Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and fog computing came up to facilitate the deployment of innovative solutions paving the way for smart scenarios, such as smart cities, smart transportation or smart homes. Indeed, cloud computing is an indispensable communication and computing paradigm for all users and Internet applications today. Most recently, enriched data availability and smart processing capacities became pervasive on user end-devices, in vehicles and on the move, all together setting the foundations for new business opportunities, market models and even new industry segments.Simultaneously, there is an emerging research trend addressing evolution of the cloud towards the edge, often under the umbrella of the so-called Fog Computing, introducing novel characteristics in cloud scenarios, such as dynamic or volatile clouds defined in vehicular scenarios, and paving the way to data driven business intelligence and smart initiatives, in areas such as smart cities, smart transportation or smart homes.
Short-bio: MSc and PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from the UPC, Xavi is Professor at the Computer Architecture Dpt. of the UPC, and is serving as CRAAX Director from its foundation in 2008. Xavi has participated and coordinated several national and EU funded research projects (recent H2020 CIPSEC and mF2C) as well as contracts with public institutions and industries (Cisco, IBM, Huawei). Current activities focus on smart scenarios, programmable networks, efficient data management, cloud and fog networking, SDN, and traditional network engineering strategies (routing, control, management, protection, network coding, QoS/QoE, etc.). He has been invited professor at the Lissi lab in University Paris-Est Creteil in 2011 and 2012, is serving as editor in the Computer Communications and OSN journals, as Guest Lecturer at TUBS, as Invited Lecturer in the OSN Journal, and has also chaired several international conferences (ONDM2008, WWIC2011, NOC2012, Saconet2014, Med-Hoc-Net2016 and IEEE/ACM IWQoS2017) and several conferences symposiums in large conferences (IEEE Globecom, IEEE ICC, IEEE ICCCN). His publications include more than 150 papers in national and international refereed journals and conferences. He has been recognized with an 2016 IBM Faculty Award.
