Invited Speaker: Catherine Havasi

Title: "Practical Natural Language Processing"

Abstract: In this presentation, I will present on Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies and their applications. Audience should expect to see examples that they can reproduce and experiment with themselves using available resources. The discussion of applications will include a light treatment of some forces that can shape the commercialization of a technology. References and strategies will be provided.

Short-bio: Catherine Havasi is a scientist who specializes in artificial intelligence (AI) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab. She is also co-founder and CEO of Luminoso, a company that uses artificial intelligence, natural language processing and machine learning to derive insights from unstructured data such as live chat transcripts, product reviews, open survey responses and email. Havasi was a member of MIT’s group Open Mind Common Sense (OMCS), an artificial intelligence project whose goal is to build and utilize a large common-sense knowledge base from the contributions of thousands of people across the Internet.  She co-authored seven peer-reviewed journal articles on AI and computer language, and presented at several major conferences.
