Road infrastructures for risk management: From regional to local dynamics

Abstract
Roads are a fundamental part of society, connecting people, services and spatially separatedactivities. However, there is a gap between research and strategic applications for solving the real world problems of road networks. This research proposes a new methodology for identifying the most important links in a road network. The study aims to help establish a bridge between academics and operational staff by exploring certain methodological problems underlying road network analysis. The proposed methodology clarifies the relationships between input variables and results, on a local and regional scale. In addition, the research shows that scale, an issue which has been neglected in road network analysis, is of fundamental importance.
