Coarticulatory Effects on European Portuguese: A First MRI Study
Authors
Abstract
In this paper, a first study of coarticulatory effects on European Portuguese fricatives and stops, based on MRI data, is presented. The sounds studied were the fricatives [f, s, S, v, z, Z] and the stop consonants [p, t, k, b, d, g], produced in a symmetric VCV context. Our results show that, also for European Portuguese, the different sounds are differently influenced by the context in which they are produced. In general, European Portuguese stops are less resistant to coarticulatory effects than fricatives. The sounds that present high resistance to coarticulation are [S] and [Z], not considering any articulator in particular.
