Abstract

This research was developed with the aim of improving interactions between the users and the computerized representations of environmental systems, through the use of nonspeech sound in educational contexts. Different research domains were visited in order to analyze the use of nonspeech sound in the areas of user-computer interaction and of environmental education. The exploration of ideas was the strategy adopted. The development of prototypes, and its validation through the collaboration with users, were considered fundamental processes.
The development and test of the “African Savannah” prototype allowed the specification of guidelines for the integration of sound in interfaces orientated around the exploration of environmental systems by middle school children. The “Hyper-List”- a hypermedia tool for the evaluation of educational multimedia applications- systematized principles for the integration of the interface elements.
The development and exploration of the “Sounds of Serralves” prototype allowed the design of guidelines and tools for the didactic exploration of soundscapes. The integration of these guidelines and tools in the interfaces make it possible for children to discover the sounds of environmental systems, to access texts related to these sounds and their sources, to navigate through a sound-web and to “catch sounds” in the context of learning activities.
