Measurement Based Admission Control for a Class Based QoS Framework

Abstract

One of the most popular research topics in computer sciences is Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in the Internet. With the certainty for the demand of, many research units worldwide are devoted to develop single components or even complete architectures. In the Laboratory for Communication and Telematics at the Computer Science department of the University of Coimbra - Portugal, such an architecture, called LCT-QoS, is under continues development. The novelty of this architecture lies in its inherent adaptivity to extreme variable network conditions, a well-known feature of the Internet, and its future aware integration of various novel mechanisms for QoS provisioning. One of these mechanisms, mandatory for each Internet QoS architecture, is Admission Control (AC). Admission control can be considered as a technique, which is responsible for resource management by regulating the number of active consumers in a network. Hence, admission control is generally one of the final components of QoS architectures since it is tailored to underlying technologies. To make LCT-QoS a full-fledged and mature QoS architecture, currently a new research branch was initiated with the aim to develop an admission control entity for LCT-QoS, called LCT-AC, and this thesis presents first results of this work. While admission control is a research topic considered as solved for other network architectures than the Internet, for the latter, many open issues still exist. Given that fact, the focus of this thesis was to analyse existing technologies and to elaborate a concept for LCT-AC. In conclusion, the motivation was to gain expertise and a framework as basis for future research activity. This thesis can roughly be divided in three parts. In the first part, a concept for LCT-AC and its evaluation is presented. Therefore, common design issues are introduced, discussed and final choices are presented. Further, two admission control algorithms are developed, a parameter based and a measurement based one. Also considered as a part of the concept, an evaluation framework for a simulation environment is designed to validate the elaborated concept. In the second part, the implementation of the developed concept in the network simulator NS-2 is introduced. This thesis is finalised in the last part where the elaborated concept and its implementation is evaluated by simulation.
