Organisations and Learning Technologies: How to Make them Meet ' the Ultimate Alignment Imperative

Abstract

Educational researchers and experts in organisational learning have been following paths that fail to converge. On the other hand, the development of learning technologies has been mainly driven by mechanistic principles that take 'content' as the central issue of learning. We claim that the dimension of 'context' must be taken into account and that it must be fully explored in communities where individual and collective learning takes place. We point out that the creation of those communities is essential both for net learning and for rganisational learning and we argue that a new body of knowledge must be sought to deal with this new perspective. We finally claim that the meeting between organisations and learning technologies that this body of knowledge supports represents the ultimate alignment imperative in our transition to a Society of Knowledge.
