IRES: Practical Physical-Layer Security in Coimbra, Portugal

Description

The main goals of the project IRES Practical Physical-Layer Security in Coimbra are to advance the state-of-the art on physical-layer techniques to secure wireless networks under eavesdropper adversaries that aim to overhear unintended information, while providing American students with a research experience abroad. This project will increase the understanding of wireless physical-layer security for communications in real-world sensor networks. Over the three-year project duration, the three yearly unifying topics of student projects will be network protocols for secrecy, intentional jamming techniques for secrecy, and novel error-correcting codes for secrecy in wireless networks. Students will implement projects on a software-defined radio platform where appropriate. The disseminated results will aid system designers in adding a completely new layer of security for wireless networks.

This IRES (International Research Experience for Students) project is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF-USA), and supports US students in research activities abroad at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Every year a group of 5 American students come to the University of Coimbra for a summer internship focused on security for wireless networks. It is a project in collaboration with Prof. Willie Harrison from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, USA.
